Digfender Game Review

Summary: An original idea which fails to carry through to any satisfying depth.

First impressions:

  • The idea of mixing miner with tower defense is intriguing.
  • The creatures are too small to provide any noticeable detail.
  • The choices you are given to dig to was disappointing.

Although there is a down theme presented, the game ends up feeling like your typical top view tower defense game. It doesn't help whereas the castle graphic is a side view, the towers themselves are presented as top view.

Other than the perspective skew, the tower graphics are quite good. Including their abilities and variety.

The play to beat the levels is fun, and you are able to upgrade your towers sufficiently. Overall though the first page of games are too easy, with one or two of them providing a little difficulty near the beginning. When you reach the final level of the page, the game suddenly because very difficult if not impossible. I had many upgrades yet I didn't come close. So the game lacks balance of steadily increasing difficulty. I didn't feel like there were any tricks I could employ.

This last level had one interesting feature however, it allow you to dig out the level before being attacked. I actually think this is the way the game should be for all the levels.

Here are a few suggestions on how this game could be improved, if the developers care:

  • Model ALL the levels like the last level, except allow mining of ALL the squares of the level. Don't restrict it. Make it a true mining game this way.
  • With that change, perhaps allow towers to be built on empty squares only, as a further way of directing traffic.
  • Put the towers into side relief.
  • Give the attacking creatures grappling hooks or ladders so the feel of the game is truly down/up.
